Daryl Mahler Classic

daryl mahler

Welcome to the 9th Annual Daryl Mahler Classic Hockey Tournament. This tournament is dedicated in memory of one very special man, Mr. Daryl Mahler. He was a program chair, physical education teacher and coach of football, track and cross country for twenty years at Denis Morris High School.  He died suddenly in 2009, and this tournament is named in his honor.  We look forward to seeing you in early December.

The word tournament is defined as “A sporting competition in which contestants play a series of games to decide the champion.” Mr. Daryl Mahler, for very different reasons would be considered one such champion. He was not the victor of a tournament, but a champion of the people for whom he came into contact.  As a champion, he was someone who gave of himself without fanfare or the need for recognition.  It is important to be able to recognize these people when they are in our midst.  If we do not, we miss the opportunity to celebrate them, to be thankful for them and most importantly to learn from them.   He taught us well through his example, giving us the capacity to fill his shoes.  Mr. Mahler was an advocate for all, as he always put others first.   In his quiet way, he was a defender of people in need.  He was the promoter of the underdog, as he encouraged people to live up to their potential.   His dedication, commitment and energy, all signs of a champion, were present in everything he did. That was very evident in the classroom, on the field, on the track and in the arena.   Daryl Mahler would not be comfortable with the title of champion.  Accolades were not something he sought out or felt comfortable with.  However, we know it to be true.  We have been blessed to know and learn from him.  We thank him for touching our lives, for his friendship and his mentorship.  We also understand that D.M. has lost apart of its heart as Daryl Mahler was definitely the heart and soul of this school and this community.  Thank you for sharing your talents and gifts with us, for being a champion in our midst!
